It was originally known as Place Royale (Royal Square). Vosges is a reference to an administrative region of north-eastern France. PdV is in the Marais district between 3rd and 4th arrondissements. It was built by Henry IV of France in the early 17th Century.
PdV is surrounded by linden, or lime, trees, sometimes known as basswood in American literature.
