The word was introduced by Michael Faraday in 1834 from the Greek word "elektron" (amber) which has been associated with electrical phenomena since the 17th Century.

Electrolysis is chemical decomposition produced by passing an electrical current through a liquid or solution containing ions (known as electrolyte).
