When is Winter

In the Northern Hemisphere, winter begins meteorologically from 1 December to 28 February (or 29 February in a leap year). 

Meteorologists use a fixed three months for each season.

Astronomical winter begins on the 21 December, known as the winter solstice and is the shortest day of they year.
